Shared note:

Obituary Blair Pilot 31 Oct 1901 Milton McCoy of DeSoto was killed by the accidental discharge of a gun Monday forenoon. He had been out duck hunting on DeSoto lake with Earl Miles and a heavy shower made it necessary for them to go ashore and as the McCoy lifted his gun from the bottom of the boat it was discharged taking effect in his left side. Death was not instantaneous but occurred before help arrived. Mr. McCoy was about 23 years of age, had lived in the county upwards of ten years and was highly respected by all who knew him. The sad affair is a great shock to the family and he entire community extends sympathy.

Shared note

Birth The person known as Texas McCoy Vance (Mrs. James) is assumed to have been born in 1869 in WV. Her obituary gives 28 Mar 1869 as the date. She is said to have been the daughter of (Wm) Anderson McCoy and Mary E. Hoylman.

The 1870 census of Trap Hill, Raleigh County, WV shows Mary Hoylman (19) living with her father and step-mother. For the first and only time in known records, she is listed as “Mary M”. Is the “M” an error, or does it stand for “McCoy”? Whatever it means, Anderson McCoy is not present and is, in fact, in Wayne County WV. 70 miles to the west (straight line) where he is working on his father’s farm with his siblings.

Although Anderson and Mary would claim in the 1900 census to have been married in 1868, no evidence of this has been found, and the 1870 census certainly argues against it.

The 1870 census (Hoylman) also includes a 1-year-old male infant named “Derrensy P.”. Hoylman is the implied last name. The assumption would be that this is the son of John Jordan Hoylman and Lachony Lester, his 2nd wife, who had married in 1866. Derrensy P. Hoylman, a male, does not appear in any later records.

The 1900 census asked women to state the number of children they had had and the number still living. Lachona Hoylman stated she had had 4 and had 4 living. Those 4 are known to be Marcus Byron, John Lorenzo, Laura Belle and Minnie Mae. There is no place for Derrensy P. Hoylman of the 1870 census. Mary McCoy’s entry in 1900 states that she had had 8 children of whom 7 were still living. The only death was that of Willie in about 1880/1, and the seven living include Texas. She also states that she has been married for 30 years (1870).

Texas McCoy, female, first appears in available records in the 1880 census as a child of Anderson and Mary McCoy in Silver Lake Township, Adams County NE. She is said to be 8 years old, making her year of birth in 1872. Her birthplace is given as Virginia (not WV).

Texas appears again in the 1885 Nebraska State Census in the same location. Here she is said to be 16 years old, which gives a birth year of 1869 (consistent with the 1870 census).

In the 1900 census, Texas is married to James Vance and living in Webster County NE with their 4 children. She gives her name as “Derensy T Vance” and states she was born in March of1869 in WV. In 1910, she is “Texas Vance” age 41 (1869). In 1920, she is “Derensy T. Vance”, age 50; census date was in February, so this is correct for 1869).

So the Derrensy P. Hoylman of the 1870 census was Derensy T. , a girl, not a boy. She was evidently Mary E Hoylman’s child, although no birth record has been found for her yet, but was she also Anderson McCoy’s child?

There is good reason to believe that Mary’s father, John Jordan Hoylman, and Anderson McCoy enlisted in the same Confederate unit 1 week apart and that they both deserted, although at different times. So they may have known each other. That possibility and the change of Mary’s middle initial to “M" in the 1870 census are the only pieces of evidence to suggest that Anderson McCoy could be the father of Texas Derensy.
