Marriage

According to the 1866 cohabitation/marriage record of Jacob and Betsy McCauley, they lived together as man and wife as of '1842 or thereabouts'.

Note

Knowing that Betsy was given the surname 'Baldwin', that she and Jacob McCauley began to cohabit circa 1842 at which time Jacob was the property of Matthew John Wilson McCauley, and that MJW McCauley lived in the southern division of Orange County (1840 Census), I have so far been unable to find a likely Baldwin home from which Betsy may have come. There are about a dozen Baldwin heads of families in 1840. Only 1 of these owned any slaves, and that person had no female slave near Betsy's age at the time.

Note

Relationships among the family members of Jacob and Betsy McCauley

Jacob's and Betsy's cohabitation/marriage record of 1866 states that they have lived as man and wife since '1842 or thereabouts'.

Cecelia, their daughter 'Lelah' in the 1870 census, is said to be 25 in that record (birth circa 1845). There is a fourth person in that census with them, 3-year-old Julia Edwards, who was, like Betsy and Lelah, a mulatto.

What is Julia's relationship to the others? She might have been Cecelia's daughter, but why would she have had the surname Edwards when Lelah used McCauley, a fact that also eliminates Jacob and Betsy as her parents.

That leaves two main possibilities: 1) That Julia Edwards was Cecelia's daughter by a man named Edwards who was not her recognized husband, or 2) That Julia is the daughter of an unknown daughter who is not present in the 1870 census.
